America's Greenest School
Hayward Photography is very proud of our school partners, the South Shore Charter Public School in Norwell. They were awarded the “America's Greenest School” award on April 27th, 2010 live on FOX25 news. They won a hybrid school bus from IC Bus, as well as a green audit and approximately $20,000 to use for green improvements. The students themselves will also share a $3,000 scholarship.
Here are a few of the great green things they are doing at their school to earn such an honor!
They have a Veggie Van that run on recycled vegetable oil that is donated by local restaurants. Gutters have been installed on their shed and all rain water is collected and use to nurture their vegetable and flower garden. All food scraps are put in a compost system and the compost is used in their gardens. Students are on plastic patrol, they take home plastic utensils, wash them in their dishwashers and return them to school to reuse. Motion sensing lighting has been installed in the bathrooms so the lights power off when the bathroom is empty. Beyond recycling their own paper products, they also use paper donated from local companies and actively encourage each other to use of both sides of the paper.
